Making of WordCamp Udaipur 2018 Logo

A lot of people think of Rajasthan as a desert. But, that’s not completely true 😉 Udaipur is known for the Aravalli ranges, lakes, and the palaces. We wanted to keep the same in mind while designing the logo and banner image.

So, we started looking around for inspiration. Udaipur’s City Palace is known for its beautiful architecture and that was the first place where we wanted to go hunting for inspiration.

The Design

Since the 2017 logo was so impressive, we decided to redo it and bring it back to life. We pivoted from mono color to gradient style and here was the result.

What Inspired us for this design?

The “Mor Chowk” in City Palace has beautiful designs of Peacocks in various positions. It’s incredibly beautiful and we decided to take that up as a major part of our logo.

Here’s an image from the Mor Chowk.

Colors

Mandaana (Line art) is a common art in Udaipur and Rajasthan. It’s used for wall paintings and also for painting “Rangoli” on the floor to welcome guests. It uses home-made colors of orange, brown, red and white. We decided to use the same in our logo as well.

So, now, we were done with our inspiration and ideas for the design and color scheme. We started working on this and Ramesh (Graphic designer at IdeaBox Creations) came up with multiple great concepts.

The floral design resembles the Peacock art in the Mor Chow (as shown in the image above). We used vibrant colors to depict colorful Rajasthan.

Next, came the idea for designing the header image and once again, Ramesh was creative enough to come up with many great ideas!

Final Logo & Header Image

Finally, after a long and tiresome process of choosing, we had a winner!

Peach / Orange color – for the traditional art.
Floral Design – Inspired from the Mor Chowk at City Palace, Udaipur.

It always feels good to see the end result of the efforts that we have put. Entire WordCamp Udaipur team is really proud of this creation.

Meet Wapuu Saa!

This year, Wapuu Saa is all dressed up for the Udaipur WordCamp event!

If you don’t know this guy. Here’s a quick hello!

Wapuu Saa is our official mascot for WordCamp Udaipur. This mischevious member of the Udaipur WordPress Community is the first one to get ready for the upcoming event.

Just have a look at his cool turban and mustache and this year Wapuu Saa has learned the skill to play Kamaicha too! 🙂

The Idea Behind Wapuu Saa

Rajasthan is a state of rich culture and heritage. It’s very well known for the unique attire. We wanted the same traditional touch for our Wapuu. So, we started exploring the design ideas.

The Turban

Starting from the top. A Turban, commonly known as Pagari (पगडी) or Paagari(पगडी) is worn by men and the style varies in different parts of the state.

Pagari in desert areas is often loose and large to protect the head from extreme heat. Pagari / Turban is usually worn in a single color but on special celebrations, people wear a colorful Pagari just like Wapuu Saa is wearing.

The Mustache

Rajasthani men have a deep-rooted tradition of maintaining glorious mustaches and our Wapuu Saa has made sure that he has a good lookin’ stache ready too. 😉

The Instrument – Kamaicha (कमैचा)

Kamaicha is a bowed string instrument from Rajasthan.  It is one of the oldest bowed instruments in the world and is a key presence in Rajasthani folk music.

Wapuu Saa being a very avid learner has learned the art of playing a Kamaicha (कमैचा) and you can see him posing with it as well.

The Dress Code

Behind the Kamaicha, you can see Wapuu Saa pulling off dhoti and kurta (धोती कुरता). Dhoti Kurta also being the oldest traditional Rajasthani attire for men, Wapuu Saa decided to just go for it.

The Name

“Saa” is commonly used to show love and respect to someone and is a part of day-to-day conversations. Hence, we named our Wapuu as Wapuu Saa.

खम्मा घणी आप सबने| म्हारे उदयपुर में आपरो स्वागत है |

Come, join us at WordCamp Udaipur on January 27, 2018, and say “Khamma Ghani” or “Raam Raam” (Rajasthani style of saying “Hello”) to our Wapuu Saa.

Presenting WordCamp Udaipur 2018 – New Look, New Year, New Goals!

This year we have changed a lot from our previous year’s design for the website.

Surely you would have noticed the new design of the website. The Theatre drapes at the top, the Puppets at every section of the page, the royal color combination and the mandna (मांडना) art style footer.

The concept and the design are a brainchild of our creative design team –  Ramesh and Ayushi.

The Puppets (कठपुतली)

You would have definitely noticed the puppets on the page. The Idea behind this image is the good old puppet shows that are famous all over Rajasthan. Kathputli(कठपुतली) is a string puppet theatre, native to Rajasthan, India and is the most popular form of Indian puppetry.

Kathputli is a join of two Rajasthani language words Kath meaning wood and Putli meaning a doll which has no life. Kathputli means a puppet which is made entirely from wood. However, it is made out of wood, cotton cloth, and metal wire.

Color Combination

The color being the most important aspect of anything, the website’s design consists of all kinds of vibrant colors to make the site look more appealing and maintain that Rajasthani touch.

The Footer – Mandna (मांडना)

You can see that the footer is made mainly out of two colors, mud brown and white. This is because the footer is based on a local art style Mandna (मांडना). This is a very old painting technique and has been there for ages. Mandana is drawn to protect home and hearth, welcome gods into the house and as a mark of celebrations on festive occasions.

What do you think of the new design, do let us know by commenting down below 🙂
